The Ladies in the Snow

Inspired by a found photo of two women playing in the snow. Part of the Imagined Archives series.

Years later, when they are still sister-friends who have known each other their whole lives and lived well into their 80s, maybe one of them will say:

“Remember that winter? Remember how we played in the snow and laughed until our sides hurt?”

And the other will nod, smile, and recall how the heavy winter snow couldn’t diminish the warmth of their joy.

Though I don't know who they are, I imagine these two as daughters of the Great Migration — women whose families moved North in search of new beginnings. Perhaps this was one of their first winters, or the first time they’d ever seen snow. A day that felt both cold and playful, unfamiliar but unforgettable.

May their joy remain alive, abundant, and contagious, warming us well into the future.
